Having joined The King’s School in Year 9 from Eglinton in New South Wales, Year 12 Bishop Barker Harris boarder Rupert leapt into everything and anything, embracing the full spectrum of a King’s education.
A Victor Futter Award recipient, Rupert has involved himself in all King’s has to offer in the classroom, at the parade ground and on the sporting field.
His enthusiasm to give everything a go has seen him become the Cadet Under Officer (CUO) of Pathfinders, where he has demonstrated his leadership abilities in the role, particularly on the Annual Field Exercise.
He also immersed himself in academics, participating in the da Vinci Decathlon and enjoying the range of subjects on offer, in particular Philosophy, something he said he would not have had the opportunity to explore if he was not at King’s.
Joining The King’s School only further supported his passion for cricket, moving into the boarding house that was only 50 metres away from the cricket nets meaning he would find himself there most mornings, afternoons and evenings.
His hunger, supplemented by the facilities available led to Rupert representing the School in the 1st and 2nd XI Cricket teams, contributing to the team that won the 2023 AAGPS 1st XI premiership.
Rupert described getting a scholarship to attend The King’s School as “a golden ticket”, stating that it can be “the most extraordinary thing and is the opportunity that has enabled me to uncover development, friendships and memories that would not have been available without the generosity of donors”.
These friendships and memories are what he labels as his proudest achievements at King’s, along with representing the School and winning premierships in both Cricket and Football.
“It’s the intangible achievements which I am most proud of. The friends I was able to make in the boarding house and the resilience to try again after getting dropped from an elite team. The courage to ask for help and apply it to my sport, my ideals and my life,” said Rupert.
However, like a golden ticket, Rupert added that it needs to be used well to take advantage of the “endless opportunities” available at the School, advising future students to “try new things, try everything you possibly can. Try and push yourself beyond your comfort zone and give everything you possible can a go”.
