in detail:
Boarding at King's
Boarding is the heart of The King’s School. Our boarders enjoy an unparalleled opportunity to live and learn on campus, develop their independence and resilience and form lifelong friendships.
Boarding is very much a home away from home where the wonderfully supportive and highly qualified staff strive to make it a welcoming and safe space, and a rewarding learning adventure. Boys are encouraged to develop their individual talents and interests, taking full advantage of excellent facilities, inspiring surroundings and access to all the opportunities on offer.
Typical boarding life is full and varied: during their time at King’s, boys will participate in an extensive range of learning programs, leadership experiences, sporting fixtures and excursions, developing their integrity, compassion, and a true sense of humility and place.
Insight:
The King’s School, Tudor House nestled on 169 acres in the Southern Highlands accommodates our youngest boarders from Years 3 to 6.
Senior School (Years 7 to 12) boarding is offered at the Parramatta campus.
A unique and rewarding experience
The boarding experience is based on boys discussing, learning about and putting into practice The King’s School values, developing responsibility for self, building a sense of place and understanding of opportunities and an appreciation of them.
We believe in a collective responsibility in ensuring the wellbeing of students in our boarding community, and provide character development, mentor and wellbeing programs. We do this through service to the school and the wider society via fundraising events, we endeavour to learn from others less fortunate and do whatever we can to volunteer our assistance.
Boys start their Senior boarding journey in Year 7 as excited and no doubt nervous young men. The boys who finish a King’s boarding experience are humble and appreciative of the opportunities they have been given, their lives having been enriched through so many different experiences, and perhaps more importantly, through the relationships they have developed and the friendships they have forged.
Exceptional facilities
King’s architecturally-designed and purpose-built boarding houses are designed to be welcoming, offering every comfort and amenity and a genuine home away from home. From here, boys have access to the School’s extensive grounds and facilities as well as a rich range of support programs both academic and pastoral.
Boys are expected to assist with jobs around their House to aid in the maintenance of this setting. Accommodation is available in dormitories in Year 7, twin-share and single bed-studies in Years 8 to 12 that feature king-single beds and climate controlled air-conditioning.
All senior houses provide lockable cupboard space for each student. External security is provided by strategically placed CCTV cameras and a security company is employed to patrol the School grounds during evenings.
All boarding houses have large screen TVs and other audio-visual equipment, pool and table tennis tables and a number of areas for recreation. We embrace the use of technology and all boarders have access to the high-quality digital services.
The School operates a full laundry service on the Senior School campus with additional laundry facilities also provided in each House.
A kitchen ‘hub’ is provided in each House for the preparation of supper and snacks.
A friendly community
The experience of boarding develops tolerance and independence and offers significant leadership opportunities.
Boarders enjoy convenient access to an extensive range of activities and facilities (sporting, social, cultural, recreational and spiritual). A weekend activity program that affords the students opportunities to attend representative sporting fixtures, recreational activities and dining experiences are amongst the many activities on offer.
Guidance and support
Additional academic support is readily available. Academic Tutors and Patrons are on duty in each Boarding House each evening as well as, evening tutors in the Centre for Learning and Leadership.
A unique location
Located on more than 320 acres of Australian bushland with swimming pools, gym facilities, sporting fields and a Mountain Bike track, the School is conveniently located in the geographic centre of Sydney, enabling our boarders to enjoy a country schooling experience in the heart of Australia’s largest global city.
Technology and phones
Technology is a critical part of life, and we embrace it fully across the School. However, there are rules and limitations on the type and amount of tech allowed within boarding Houses. Our Southern Highlands campus applies a no-screens policy to encourage outdoor and creative play.
Each house has its own phones for shared use by boarders and their parents. These are in place to encourage family communication and there are rules on their use.
