STEAM Week – Mathematics

In recognition of National Science Week, The King’s School has embraced its own Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Week.

Mathematics is the foundation that strengthens and elevates every aspect of STEAM, propelling innovation and creativity to new heights in the following areas.

  • Problem-Solving: Math equips us with essential tools for dissecting and resolving intricate problems.
  • Data Analysis: Through statistical methods and modelling, it enables the interpretation of complex quantitative data.
  • Design and Innovation: Mathematical principles are indispensable for the creation and optimisation of cutting-edge systems and technologies.
  • Interdisciplinary Links:  Math serves as the connective tissue across STEAM fields, fostering the integration and application of knowledge across disciplines.

A compelling example of this synergy is the Parramatta River STEAM Project from last year. In this project, students employed drones with custom payloads to collect and transport litter from the river. They analysed water samples to evaluate the river’s health, using mathematical and scientific methods. The collected waste was transformed into bird sculptures representing local wildlife, blending art with environmental science. This initiative beautifully showcased how mathematics, when combined with technology, art, and science, can drive ecological enhancement and elevate community consciousness.

By harnessing the power of mathematics, the Parramatta River STEAM Project not only enriched students’ understanding and appreciation of the interconnectedness of STEAM but also made a tangible impact on the environment.

To celebrate STEAM Week The King’s School is holding a STEAM Showcase at 5.45pm on Wednesday 14 August at The Science Centre.
